Theobald Announces Decision on U.S. Senate Race

After careful consideration, retired educator Paul Theobald announced today that he would not be a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2024. Here is his full statement:

“I intended to publicly announce my candidacy during the month of July, but given the funding approach, shortsighted in my view, of the national party, Nebraska Democrats need a candidate who can dedicate all of their time and energy to running a campaign. I am not that person, and thus I have decided that I will not seek to be Nebraska’s next U.S. Senator.

Once upon a time, Nebraska led the way in defending the rights of ordinary people against powerful corporations. We stood firmly in favor of clean and good government - and now, Nebraskans will once more have to rally together against someone who epitomizes its erosion. Without a strong Democratic Party to counter Republican extremism, our democracy will continue to backslide and the rights of Nebraskans to live in peace will continue to be taken away. I hope that the Nebraska Democratic Party will rise to the occasion in 2024 and I look forward to helping them accomplish that mission - just not as a candidate for public office.”
